They were sprayed by a skunk and we were warned when we bought them. I sprayed Febreeze on the mats and literally the smell had gone. I too, had read the reviews on-line, because I was considering buying a new mat with my Christmas money, but opted for re-stocking my yarn stash instead. I guess I'm glad I did!
